Slide movement then cocks the hammer for subsequent single-action shots. A frame-mounted decocking lever lowers the hammer into a safety intercept position without requiring the trigger to be pressed. An internal firing-pin safety blocks forward movement of the firing pin until the trigger mechanism disengages it.[3]

This control system is central to the original P226 configuration. The standard double-action/single-action pistol has a decocking lever but no manually operated safety. Later members of the broader P226 family have used double-action-only, DAK, and single-action-only mechanisms. Single-action-only versions are distinguished by their manual safety and the absence of the conventional decocking lever.[3][4]

One SIG Sauer manual lists the standard P226 with a 4.4-inch barrel, 7.7-inch overall length, 5.5-inch height, and 1.5-inch width. The same publication documents 9 mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG chamberings. Nominal magazine capacities were listed as 15 rounds for 9 mm and 12 rounds for the other two calibers.[4]

That manual lists alloy-frame examples at 34 ounces with a magazine and stainless-frame versions at 42.2 ounces. Current SIG Sauer factory literature describes the Classic Line slide as solid, high-strength stainless steel.[3] Later pistols may also have an integral accessory rail, revised grip systems, different sights, forward slide serrations, or specialized trigger components. As a result, the P226 designation covers a family of configurations rather than one unchanging specification.

For collector identification, evaluate the slide construction, frame profile, rail configuration, caliber markings, trigger system, controls, sights, grips, and finish together. A slide with a separate pinned breechblock belongs to a different construction pattern from a solid stainless-steel slide. A frame-mounted decocking lever identifies a different operating system from the manual safety fitted to a single-action-only version.

Replacement slides, barrels, grips, sights, and controls can obscure a pistol’s original configuration. Therefore, compare individual components with date-appropriate factory literature before describing a P226 as original or assigning it to a particular production period.
