Greg Mooney spent more than thirty years building other companies' gun businesses before he built his own. He held senior leadership roles at Benchmade, Buck Knives, Benelli USA, and STI International, the modular double-stack 1911 maker that later became Staccato. In 2018, he and his wife Kim left that career behind and opened Cosaint Arms in East Flat Rock, North Carolina, in the state's western mountains.

The name comes from the Gaelic word for "protect and defend," chosen for what a handgun is for and the Mooneys' Irish heritage. From the outset, Cosaint built guns to order rather than off the shelf, the same production-custom approach Mooney had seen shape STI's competition pistols. The early lineup split into two families: the COS11, a single-stack 1911 offered in Officer, Commander, and Government sizes, and the COS21, a double-stack 2011 built on the same footprint but, as Mooney describes it, engineered as its own design rather than a copy of the original. Both came in 9mm, .45 ACP, .40 S&W, or 10mm, depending on frame size, with a choice of steel or aluminum frames and a range of Cerakote finishes.

Cosaint's introduction to the wider trade came in October 2022, when the company presented at the Blue August/Outdoor News America writers' conference at Texas Gun Experience near Dallas, an event built around hands-on testing rather than trade-show booths. By early 2024, the guns were appearing at SHOT Show, and reviewers had begun singling out the brand's SV-porting system, a vertical gas-bleed cut into the barrel and slide meant to keep the pistol flatter under rapid fire. That system became the signature of HAVOC, a steel-framed COS21 performance line Cosaint introduced in 2024, followed roughly a year later by DARA, a lighter aluminum-framed line built for carry and duty use. A HAVOC Gen II variant, developed with reviewers at Weapon Collective and Major Havoc Gun Reviews, added hybrid porting and a DLC finish with rose-gold highlights to the line in 2025.

Cosaint remains a small operation, combining in-house machining with outside partners and components from established industry suppliers, all hand-fitted at the East Flat Rock shop. Pricing runs from roughly $1,600 for an entry-level build to $4,600 for a HAVOC Gen II. In April 2025, the company exhibited at the NRA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, its first appearance of that scale, showing the HAVOC and DARA lines together to a national audience.

The clearest sign of collector interest arrived in 2022, when Dallas-based investor Charles Lemmon formed Your Unique Arms LLC after several years of conversations with Mooney, whom he had met through STI's former board chairman. The venture commissions limited-edition Cosaint pistols made entirely from US components, each inspected and signed by Mooney with a certificate of authenticity before it ships. Cosaint Arms has no public military or police contracts on record. Its business runs on individual collectors and competitive shooters rather than institutional buyers, consistent with the custom-shop model Mooney set out to build in 2018.
