Russell J. Smith Engraved Smith & Wesson Model 53 Bicentennial

Start with the names cut into the steel and you understand why this Model 53 stops collectors cold. "OP SAIL '76" runs along the frame above a finely cut clipper ship under full sail. "1776 1976" sits gold filled along the underside of that long .22 Jet barrel. And tucked behind the cylinder is the paper trail that ties it all together, original Russell J. Smith design drawings on Smith & Wesson Springfield letterhead with the engraver's own handwritten notes.

Russ Smith was one of the most respected hands ever associated with S&W engraving, and this is full coverage work. The scroll runs across the frame, the barrel, the cylinder, and the topstrap, tight and deliberate, the kind of cut that rewards a slow look under good light. Gold and silver inlay carries the patriotic theme without shouting. A gilt Statue of Liberty stands on the frame ahead of the grip. Silver stars sit inlaid along the barrel rib beside the gold 22 MAGNUM panel. The deep blue finish underneath gives every line of it somewhere to land.

A period snapshot of that Elvis revolver, given by Smith himself before it went to Hiram's, sits with the file.

The revolver carries its 8.375 inch barrel, smooth Goncalo grips with S&W medallions, and the auxiliary engraved cylinder that lets it run .22 Magnum and .22 LR alongside the .22 Jet.
