A Ray Viramontez master-engraved Colt Government Model in .45 ACP with raised gold panther and wild boar inlays. Accompanied by Colt factory letter, engraver correspondence, and original transparencies.
Ray Viramontez did not just decorate this Colt Government Model, he turned it into a study in scroll and gold. The man was a Dayton, Ohio engraver good enough that his work made the pages of Guns Magazine, and this .45 is one of the pieces that earned him that reputation. What pushes it past most engraved Colts is the paper that travels with it. There's a 1987 letter from owner Merle Wilberding to Viramontez himself, the engraver's own reply on his letterhead, the original photographic transparencies he shot of the gun, and a Colt factory letter confirming the pistol shipped from Hartford on May 18, 1966 to the Miami Valley Shooting Grounds in Vandalia, Ohio. You rarely get the gun, the engraver, and the correspondence all in one place.
The work itself runs across the whole pistol. Deeply cut English scroll fills the slide flats, the frame, the mainspring housing, and the small parts, all of it framed by fine gold line borders that keep the dense field from running wild. Both sides of the slide carry raised gold game animals. A crouching panther stalks one flank while a charging wild boar drives forward on the other, each set against a silvered scroll ground that throws them into relief. Gold scroll cartouches accent the frame below.
The blue runs deep and bright, with the high polish on the flats playing off the matte cut of the engraving. Smooth, light-figured wood grips sit against all that metalwork, a quiet choice that lets the cutting carry the show.
For the collector who chases engraved Colts, the appeal here is the trail. You can hold the pistol, read the letters that passed between owner and artist, and see the very transparencies Viramontez took before it left his bench.
