A 1953 Colt Government Model 1911 in .45 ACP, fully engraved by master engraver John Adams Jr. Comes with its Colt factory letter and vintage box.
Look closely at the slide flat and you can read the whole story. Above the Hartford address, the COLT'S MFG. CO. line sits framed by scrollwork so dense it almost swallows the lettering. This is a 1953 Government Model, and the steel has been given over almost entirely to the chisel of John Adams Jr., one of the most respected American engravers of the modern era. His mark, JAII, hides beneath the right grip panel where only the curious will find it.
The engraving is the reason to stop here. Flowing American scroll runs across the slide, frame, trigger guard, mainspring housing, and even out to the muzzle and the magazine baseplate. The cuts are deep, the shading tight, and the leaf-and-scroll pattern reads the same on every surface. The Rampant Colt stands clear on the left side of the slide, surrounded but never crowded. Adams left the slide serrations, the sights, and the hammer in clean black bluing, which gives the eye somewhere to rest against all that movement.
The grips are smooth blonde wood, light against the dark steel and free of any carving. That contrast is deliberate. After all the scroll, the plain panels let the metalwork breathe.
The finish is the other surprise. The bluing remains rich and deep across the high-relief work, with only the faintest handling marks on the edges. The bore reads as a shooter that was cared for, not carried hard.
And the paper backs it up. The pistol ships with its Colt factory letter documenting a ten-gun batch sent to John J. Tobler Inc. of Union City, New Jersey, in December 1953. It also comes with a vintage Kraft-style box and a hand-labeled tag matching the gun. For a collector who wants a working canvas of American engraving on the most iconic .45 ever built, this is the one to handle slowly.
