Colt SSP Prototype Double Action Semi-Automatic Pistol

Colt didn't build many of these, and the slide marking tells you why this one stops you cold. It reads COLT'S MODEL S S P over 45 ACP, the rollmark of an experimental program that never reached production. The SSP, depending on who you ask, stood for Stainless Steel Pistol or Stainless Service Pistol. Either way, it was Colt's early 1970s bet on what a next-generation service sidearm should be, built while the U.S. military was still arguing the question.

The layout breaks hard from the 1911. You get a double action trigger, a slide-mounted decocking arrangement, and a stainless steel frame and slide. Look at the front of the slide and you'll see the recessed full-length design and the takedown screw set into the dustcover, a departure from anything Colt was shipping at the time. The finish is a matte stainless that runs the length of the gun. There's honest handling wear here, light scratching across the flat of the slide and some softening on the high edges, the kind of marks a working prototype picks up moving between hands and benches. The bore is clean. The walnut shows warm color with darker tones near the heel.

That's the thing about the SSP. Very few left Hartford. Some went into testing, some disappeared into institutional archives, and the ones that surface now tend to settle into serious Colt collections and stay there. The convertible-caliber concept it floated, swapping between 9mm and .45 with minimal parts, turned up in military pistols decades later. This is the gun where Colt reached for that idea first. For a collector chasing Colt's experimental work, there are few targets harder to land than an SSP wearing the .45 ACP marking.
