A factory Grade "D" engraved Colt Single Action Army in .45 Colt with a 7.5 inch barrel and unfluted cylinder. Accompanied by a Colt factory letter confirming the engraving grade and 1978 shipment.
Most factory-engraved Single Action Army revolvers carry coverage on the major surfaces and call it a day. This one doesn't. The scroll runs from muzzle to backstrap, across the loading gate, down the ejector rod housing, and even wraps onto the steel base of the one-piece walnut grip. That last detail is the tell. When Colt's shop committed to a Class D job, they meant the whole gun.
The documentation backs it. A Colt factory letter from the Office of the Historian, signed by M.S. Huber and dated December 1983, confirms the revolver as a Grade "D" engraved Single Action Army in .45 Colt with a 7.5 inch barrel, blue finish, and an unfluted cylinder. It shipped in 1978 to Wisconsin as one of four guns on the same factory order. That letter travels with the gun, and for an engraved Colt it is the difference between a story and a fact.
The engraving itself is deep, fully cut American scroll against a dark blued ground, with the polished cut lines standing bright where the graver pulled through. The frame wears case-color around the loading gate and recoil shield, set off by the darkened cylinder and barrel. Up top the barrel reads COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY 45, and the address line COLT'S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. shows clean through the scroll. The hammer is left bright and the grip is one-piece walnut.
The four click cock works exactly as Colt intended, and the 7.5 inch barrel gives this one the long cavalry profile that collectors of full-coverage guns tend to chase. Paired with its factory letter and presentation case, this is a third generation SAA that earns its keep on documentation alone. Add the engraving coverage and it becomes something a serious Colt shelf doesn't often see.
