A factory engraved Colt Single Action Army in .45 Colt, built as a sampler of four historical Colt engraving styles. Bright nickel finish with smooth ivory stocks and Colt archive documentation, one of only 53 produced in this configuration.
Here's a Colt Single Action Army built to do one job: show you what the engraver's hand can do. The factory letter from Colt's Manufacturing Company calls it the Engraving Sampler, and it lays out the whole concept on a single revolver. Four distinct historical engraving styles, each named after a master cutter, laid side by side so the eye can compare them across one canvas.
Read it from the muzzle back. The barrel and ejector rod housing carry a Contemporary scroll. The frame wears Helfricht. The cylinder shows Nimschke. And the bottom of the backstrap and trigger guard bow run in Henshaw Type B. The backstrap is line cut down the spine in script reading Colt Engraving Sampler, with the 150th Rampant Colt logo engraved across the top. That logo also appears on the nickel grip medallions set into the smooth ivory stocks.
The stocks tell the story too. Scrimshawed in script down the left panel, they list R. Henshaw 1831, L. Nimschke 1850-1900, C. Helfricht 1871-1921, and Contemporary. Four eras of Colt embellishment, named and dated, on the grips of one gun.
The metalwork is bright nickel, deeply polished, with the engraving cutting clean shadow lines across every reflective surface. The cylinder vignettes and the fan and geometric patterns on the recoil shield catch light at every angle. It's a 4.75 inch barrel chambered in .45 Colt, the configuration that carried the SAA through its working life.
The accompanying Colt archive letter documents the engraving by Denise Thirion and confirms this gun as one of only 53 produced in this particular Sampler configuration. For a collector who studies engraving styles, this is a reference piece you can hold. The names, the dates, and the cuts are all here in one place.
