Colt Government Model MKIV Series 70 - Engraved

Most engraved 1911s reach for eagles and oak leaves. This one goes hunting. The whole gun is laid out as a game scene, with gold-inlaid turkeys, quail, and flushing upland birds set into deep scrollwork that runs the full length of the slide and frame. That theme carries the piece, and it gives the work a story rather than just ornament.

Underneath the embellishment is a genuine Colt Government Model MKIV Series 70 in .45 ACP, the Hartford-marked layout collectors know by heart. The slide still wears its Series 70 roll mark and the COLT'S P.T.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CONN. address. From there the artisans took over. The steel is finished in a deep charcoal blue that reads almost black, and against it the bright gold wire borders trace every edge and panel line. Hand-cut foliate scroll covers nearly every surface, from the muzzle and bushing back through the mainspring housing.

The contrast is what carries it. Gold game birds sit in relief against the dark scroll, while the trigger, mainspring housing checkering, and barrel bushing wear matching gold tones. The bushing and recoil cap show a knurled gold treatment that catches light at the muzzle. Even the front and back straps are fully engraved.

The grips are smooth ivory, left clean and unadorned. That blank space matters. It lets the eye rest and pushes the engraving forward.

The work is signed and cased by Wood Art Custom, presented in a fitted wood case with green suede lining. This is built to be looked at, handled slowly, and shown. For a collector who hunts upland birds or simply wants a 1911 that breaks from the usual eagle-and-scroll formula, this one stands on its own.
