An engraved Colt Combat Commander MK IV Series 80 in .45 ACP, built by the Colt Custom Shop and formerly owned by Tom Selleck. Accompanied by a signed letter of provenance and a fitted walnut presentation case.
A signed letter from Tom Selleck does not accompany many handguns, but this one carries his name twice. Dated February 6, 2023, the letter on his personal stationery confirms the Colt Custom Shop built this Combat Commander for him along with three other Colts, and that he carried it briefly before deciding it was simply too nice for daily wear. The other three he donated to the NRA Firearms Museum. This one stayed with him. That makes it the carry-gun of the four, and the only one that ever left his hands rather than going behind museum glass.
The pistol underneath the story holds up on its own. It's a Combat Commander Model, the steel-frame Commander built on the MK IV Series 80 platform, chambered in .45 ACP with the 4.25 inch barrel that gives the Commander its quick, balanced feel. The roll marks read clean across the slide, COLT MK IV SERIES 80 with the rampant colt, and COMBAT COMMANDER MODEL down the right side of the frame.
What lifts it is the engraving. Flowing American scroll runs across the slide flats, the frame around the dust cover, the area behind the trigger guard, and up onto the spur grommet of the beavertail. The cuts are deep and disciplined, the kind of coverage that rewards a slow look under good light. A Novak's rear sight sits at the back of the slide. The grips are smooth ivory-tone panels that throw warm contrast against the deep blued steel.
It comes cased in a hinged walnut box with red felt lining, a spare extended magazine, and the signed Selleck letter that anchors the whole package. For a collector who wants Hollywood history and Custom Shop handwork in one piece, this is a hard one to walk past.
