A third generation Colt Single Action Army in .45 Colt with full-coverage factory scroll engraving. Color case-hardened frame, smooth walnut grips, and the original Custom Shop presentation box.
The engraving on this Single Action Army runs farther than most factory work you'll come across. It wraps the full length of the barrel, covers the cylinder, fills the frame, and continues down the ejector housing to the muzzle. That's the first thing you notice. The second is the color case-hardened frame underneath it, mottled with blue, gold, and charcoal that moves as you turn the gun in the light.
This one came out of the Colt Custom Shop in 1978, a third generation gun chambered in .45 Colt. The work is traditional American scroll, cut deep and balanced across every surface, with the kind of flow that only comes off a skilled hand. The barrel still wears its standard markings reading Colt Single Action Army and the .45 caliber stamp, both visible through the scroll. The bluing on the barrel sits dark and even, and the engraved lines stand out against it cleanly.
The grips are smooth walnut in the classic Colt plow handle profile. They've got a warm honey tone with figure running through the wood, and they pair naturally with the case colors above. No medallions, no checkering, just clean wood that lets the metalwork carry the show.
The long barrel gives the gun real reach and a forward balance that settles in the hand. The four click action works the way Colt set it up, with the hammer, trigger, and ejector all moving as they should. And the case colors on the frame remain vivid, which matters because case hardening is the first thing to fade on a working revolver. This one has been kept.
It comes in the Colt presentation box with the maroon Colts Patent Repeating Pistols lid and the 1977 Custom Shop copyright card. For a collector who wants factory engraving on a third generation SAA with the box intact, this is the kind of piece you set under glass and leave there.
