A Belgian factory engraved Browning Hi Power Classic in 9mm Luger, built by FN Herstal with full eagle and foliate scroll engraving. Wears French gray finish, gold-tone trigger and hammer, and ivory-tone wildlife scrimshaw grips.
The eagle is what catches you first. FN's engravers worked a full bald eagle in flight across the slide of this Hi-Power Classic, wings spread through dense foliate scroll, with smaller eagle heads tucked into the borders along the frame and dust cover. It's the kind of coverage that makes you turn the gun over and keep finding more. And the work is deep, with dark backgrounds throwing every cut into relief.
This is FN's commemorative Hi-Power, built at Fabrique Nationale Herstal in the mid 1980s to mark the platform's approaching fiftieth anniversary. The frame carries the full address, MADE IN BELGIUM BY FABRIQUE NATIONALE HERSTAL, with BROWNING CLASSIC banner-scrolled beneath the trigger guard. The slide flat reads BROWNING ARMS COMPANY MORGAN, UTAH & MONTREAL P.Q., and just below it, ONE OF FIVE THOUSAND. That marked figure was the ambition. Collector research and surviving records put actual engraved Classic production well under three thousand, so the number on the gun overstates how many were really built.
The finish is the satin silver-gray French gray that FN used on these presentation guns, soft and matte so the engraving reads cleanly rather than fighting a high polish. A gold-tone trigger and gold-tone hammer spur play against all that gray. The grips are ivory-tone panels with finely rendered wildlife scrimshaw, a cougar on one side worked in fine line detail.
The pistol keeps the standard Hi-Power layout underneath the dress. It's a 9mm Luger, single action, fed by a 13-round double-stack magazine, with the spur hammer and ring-style sights this generation is known for. The bore is bright. The slide-to-frame fit is tight and the engraving shows no wear.
For a Browning collector, the Classic sits a notch above standard Belgian production, and an eagle-pattern example in this condition is the version you actually want to own.
