BG Defense

BG Defense holds a federal Type 07 manufacturing license, the designation that separates a company assembling parts from one cutting its own receivers and building complete firearms. That distinction matters for a shop this size. Out of a facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the company designs and machines its rifle and pistol platforms under its own roof rather than sourcing finished guns from outside vendors, a setup closer to a custom shop than a mass importer.

The company was incorporated in Michigan in 2014 and began operating under the BG Defense name in 2016, according to its Better Business Bureau filing. Its early work centered on made-to-order AR-15 builds for individual customers, a small, slow-moving segment of the market. The shift toward a standardized production rifle, sold under the TYPE-A brand, came with the SIPR (Standard Issue Patrol Rifle), a 5.56 NATO carbine also offered in .450 Bushmaster.

A January 2017 review from Michigan firearms outlet 248 Shooter (also published on GAT Daily) placed the SIPR alongside Daniel Defense, LWRCi, Bravo Company, Troy Industries, Sig Sauer, and FNH USA, treating it as a rifle meant to compete at that tier rather than undercut it. That comparison, made by an outside reviewer rather than the company's own marketing, is the earliest substantial third-party account of BG Defense as a production manufacturer.

The lineup broadened from there into a tiered architecture: a Standard+ base build; a Pro Forged (PRO) upgrade with a 416R stainless-match barrel and titanium-nitride bolt carrier group; and a fully ambidextrous Contractor billet model, built on MSR-15 (5.56) and MSR-10 (.308) receiver platforms. The company also sells the individual components, uppers, lowers, barrels, and build kits, that supply the DIY AR-15 market alongside its complete rifles.

In 2023, BG Defense entered the pistol market with the EG11, a hand-fit 2011-style double-stack 9mm sold as a complete package with optic, weapon light, holster, and magazines, announced at SHOT Show and positioned against Staccato, Nighthawk Custom, and Wilson Combat in the high-end double-stack segment. A long-form review from The Firearm Blog, built on roughly 6,000 rounds fired over eight months, is the most detailed independent account of the pistol's performance published to date. BG Defense remains a small, privately held manufacturer without a publicly documented military or law enforcement contract; its relevance to a collector at this point rests on build quality and a distinct, in-house approach to both the AR platform and the double-stack 1911, rather than institutional history.
