Walther P38 50 Jahre Jubiläumspistole

Walther built the P38 50 Jahre to mark half a century of the pistol that replaced the Luger in German service, and they did not do it quietly. The slide carries "50 Jahre P38 1938-1988" in gold script down its left side, and the controls pick up that same warmth. The hammer, trigger, and slide-mounted safety lever all wear gold accents that play against the deep, mirror-bright commercial bluing the rest of the gun carries.

Underneath the dress, this is the real thing. It's a post-war Walther P38 in 9mm, the short-recoil, locked-breech design with the exposed loaded-chamber indicator and the double-action trigger that set the template for so many service pistols that followed. The 4.9 inch barrel, the open-top slide, the wedge-locking block. All of it is here, working exactly as Carl Walther intended.

The grips are where the commemorative theme really comes through. They're carved walnut, cut deep with oak-leaf and acorn motifs, a German hunting and military tradition that runs back generations. The Walther banner sits at the top of each panel. That oak-leaf carving carries straight onto the presentation case, a solid walnut box with the same leaves framing the Walther banner across the lid in heavy relief.

Open it and you get the blue velvet interior with a brass plaque reading "Jubiläumspistole P38 1938-1988." The case sits on small gilt feet and closes with gilt hardware.

The bluing on this example is deep and even, the bore looks bright, and the gold accents are crisp. For a Walther collector, the P38 is one of the cornerstone pieces. A factory anniversary edition in this condition, complete with its carved case and plaque, is the version you hold onto.
