Race City Defense RC9 5-Inch Ported

The double-stack 1911 keeps proving there's room left to improve on John Browning's century-old design, and Race City Defense builds some of the best examples coming out of North Carolina right now. The shop works out of Mooresville, better known as Race City USA for the NASCAR teams and machinists packed into the area, and that motorsport background shows up in how tight this gun runs.

This RC9 comes in the 5-inch government-length configuration, built around an Atlas Gunworks bull barrel that's flush-cut, crowned, and ported to tame muzzle rise. If you've shot both barrel lengths, you know the debate: the 5-inch gives a longer sight radius and a softer, more forgiving recoil impulse, while the 4.25-inch trades some of that smoothness for a snappier, faster-handling gun. Race City doesn't pick a side, and honestly, you can't go wrong either way.

The trigger breaks at 2 to 2.5 pounds, about as light as you'll find on a duty-capable double-stack, and it pairs with Atlas-hardened steel internals built to withstand high round counts. The slide carries a flat-top profile with deep front and rear serrations, cut for RMR and SRO footprints, and shipped with the optics plate already installed. Grips are Race City's own aluminum panels, shaped for a secure hold without adding bulk.

Finish here is DLC black, a diamond-like coating that's about as hard and abrasion-resistant as a finish gets. Race City sends the coating out to a dedicated shop and won't let a pistol leave the building until it clears its own inspection. Two magazines ship with it, a standard 17-round and a 20-round Atlas Gunworks magazine, so you're set up for both carry and mag-dump range days from the start. It's a gun built by people who grew up around race shops, and it shows in the fit.
