A John Martz custom Baby Luger conversion chambered in 9mm. Features a shortened barrel, deep blue finish, and hand-checkered walnut grips with the MSTR and JM Martz markings.
John Martz built his reputation taking standard Lugers apart and rebuilding them into things the factory never made, and this is one of his Baby Luger conversions. Look at the proportions. Everything has been scaled down from the standard P08 frame, the result of Martz cutting, shortening, and refitting an original DWM toggle action into a smaller, tighter package that still cycles 9mm. That kind of work is not a parts swap. It is hand benchwork from start to finish, and Martz was one of the very few smiths in the world who could pull it off.
The markings tell the story. Stamped along the side rail you'll find MSTR, Martz's master mark, alongside his oval JM cartouche struck into the receiver. Those are the signatures collectors hunt for, and they're the difference between a genuine Martz and a tribute. The DWM toggle still carries its original maker's monogram, a nice link back to the donor gun's heritage.
The metalwork wears a deep, even blue that runs across the frame, toggle, and barrel assembly. Edges are struck clean. The straw and fire blue on the small parts, the safety lever, the trigger, and the grip screws give it that period-correct contrast Luger people love. The grips are checkered walnut, hand cut with sharp diamonds and fitted close to the frame with no gaps at the borders.
The shortened barrel sits flush in the receiver with a crisp front sight blade, and the toggle knobs show their knurling clean and unworn. The bore is bright.
Martz passed in 2014, which closed the book on new work from his bench. What you hold here is a finite thing. For the Luger collector who wants the most distinctive expression of American custom gunsmithing applied to Georg Luger's design, a signed Martz Baby is the piece that anchors a collection.
