Most P99 collectors have never laid eyes on a La Chasse, and that's the whole point of stopping on this one. Walther built the P99 as a fighting and duty pistol, a polymer striker-fired gun aimed squarely at law enforcement and the civilian defense market. This example wears a completely different costume. The slide is laser-engraved end to end with German oak-leaf and acorn scroll, the kind of motif you'd expect on a drilling or a fine sporting rifle, not on a tactical 9mm. Along the flat it reads nach Wildmeister Duderstaedt, a tribute to Hans-Joachim Duderstaedt, the German Wildmeister whose Nachsuchenpraxis work on tracking wounded game inspired the series. The leaping deer La Chasse banner rides up front near the muzzle.
The two-tone treatment is what catches the eye first. A matte black slide sits over an olive-drab polymer frame, a palette pulled straight from the woods. Look closely at the right-side grip and you'll find a wood-tone insert panel worked into the frame texture, an odd and welcome touch on a gun this modern. The slide carries the standard Walther address, the P99 designation, and the 9mm x 19 chamber marking. Made in Germany is molded into the frame just ahead of the trigger.
Up top sit fiber-optic sights with bright red inserts front and rear, a practical nod to the low-light tracking role this gun was dressed for. The slide shows light handling wear on the high edges and around the muzzle, honest contact marks that don't distract from the engraving.
The package is what makes it. It comes in the blue Walther case with a spare magazine, the La Chasse Nachsuchenpraxis booklet by Duderstaedt himself, and a factory test target marked in 9mm x 19.
