The SIG Sauer MCX Spear 6.8x51 is the civilian model based on the US Army's M7 rifle. It's a short-stroke piston rifle with fully ambidextrous controls.
In April 2022, the U.S. Army selected SIG Sauer for its Next Generation Squad Weapon program. The rifle side of that program, the XM7, is based on the SIG MCX Spear, and the MCX Spear 6.8x51 is SIG's civilian model based on the Army's rifle, now designated the M7.
It's chambered in 6.8x51, the cartridge SIG developed for the program, which SIG sells commercially as .277 FURY hybrid ammunition. The Spear delivers muzzle velocities above 3,000 feet per second with a 113-grain bullet. The platform can also be converted to 7.62x51 or 6.5 Creedmoor.
The rifle uses a short-stroke piston with a two-position adjustable gas valve. The 16-inch barrel is cold hammer forged with a 1-in-7 twist and 5/8-24 threads, and it carries SIG's CLUTCH-LOCK QD flash hider. The handguard is free floating with M-LOK slots.
The controls are fully ambidextrous. The Spear has both a non-reciprocating side charging handle and a rear charging handle, so you can run it whichever way you're used to. The stock is a Magpul SL-M that folds and telescopes, and the trigger is a two-stage match unit.
It measures 38.1 inches long, 34.8 collapsed and 28.1 folded, and weighs 9.2 pounds. The receiver and controls are coyote anodized. SIG includes one 20-round steel magazine.
