A 1980 third generation Colt Sheriff's Model Single Action Army in .44-40, engraved by Master Engraver John Adams Sr. with roughly ninety percent floral scroll coverage and screaming eagles on the hammer. Cased with a matching engraved .44 Special cylinder and brass-plaqued hardwood display case.
Look at the front sight blade. Most engravers stop short of it, leaving the leading edge bare. John Adams Sr. didn't. He carried the floral scroll right up and over the blade itself, the kind of detail that tells you exactly whose hand you're looking at. This is a 1980 third generation Colt Sheriff's Model, a Single Action Army with the short ejectorless barrel and birdshead grip frame, and Adams covered roughly ninety percent of its surface in tight floral scroll.
The work runs frame to muzzle without a break in rhythm. Punch-dot shading fills the background, leafy motifs trail along the top strap and back strap, and checkerboard accents break up the open panels. The barrel still reads COLT S.A.A. 44 CAL through the scrollwork, and the top of the barrel carries the COLT SHERIFFS MODEL legend. Both sides of the hammer wear a screaming eagle, wings back and beak open, cut deep enough to read across the room. Adams signed his work where it counts. His J. Adams signature sits on the front of the frame.
The finish is bright nickel, and it does what bright nickel does to engraving. Every cut throws a shadow against the polish, so the deeper you look the more the pattern gives up. Smooth ivory grips wear the Colt rampant colt medallion, the natural figure running warm against all that silver. The screws are fire-blued, a small flash of color against the white metal.
The set is housed in a French-fitted hardwood Colt display case lined in blue velvet, with a brass plaque reading Colt Sheriff's Model Engraved by John Adams Sr. A second cylinder sits in the recess, engraved to match and chambered in .44 Special, alongside a steel cleaning rod.
This is a gun built to be shown, not carried. Adams helped define what American factory-style engraving looks like in the modern era, and a Sheriff's Model wearing his full coverage and his signature is the kind of piece that anchors a collection rather than filling a slot in it.
