The Luger P08, formally designated Pistole Parabellum 1908, is one of the most recognizable and historically significant firearms ever produced—a semi-automatic pistol whose elegant, angular lines, distinctive toggle-lock operating mechanism, and deep association with both World Wars have made it an icon of 20th-century military history and one of the most extensively collected handguns in existence. Designed by Georg Luger as a refinement of the earlier Borchardt C-93, the P08 was adopted by the German military in 1908 and served as Germany’s primary service sidearm through World War I and into World War II.
The toggle-lock operating mechanism is the P08’s most technically distinctive feature—a jointed toggle arm that locks over center at the moment of firing and buckles upward as chamber pressure drops to cycle the action. This mechanism, derived from the earlier Borchardt design, is mechanically elegant and historically interesting but significantly more complex than the tilting-barrel and tilting-block designs that succeeded it, and the Luger’s reputation for sensitivity to ammunition and adverse conditions reflects the precision tolerances that the toggle system requires to function correctly.
The P08 chambers the 9mm Parabellum cartridge, developed by Georg Luger specifically for this pistol and first adopted by the German Navy in 1904. The 9mm Parabellum—also known as 9mm Luger—has become the most widely used pistol cartridge in the world, a legacy that makes the P08 indirectly responsible for the dominant standard in modern defensive and military handgun ammunition.
The Luger was manufactured by DWM, Erfurt Arsenal, Simson, Mauser, Krieghoff, and others in a wide variety of configurations, barrel lengths, and military and commercial variants, creating a collecting specialty of extraordinary depth and complexity. P08 Lugers remain among the most actively traded and studied of all vintage military firearms.
