Description
This Rock Island Arsenal M15 Pistol – Prototype reflects an early stage in the development of the U.S. military’s General Officer sidearm program. Built at Rock Island Arsenal and marked “General Officer Model RIA” on the slide, it represents the transitional thinking between the standard M1911A1 service pistol and a purpose-built handgun for senior military leadership.
Chambered in .45 ACP, this pistol follows the familiar 1911 pattern while incorporating details associated with early General Officer Model development. The slide markings, configuration, and finish correspond to the evolving specifications discussed during the program in the early 1970s. Prototype variations of this type are referenced in U.S. Military Automatic Pistols 1945–2012 by Edward Scott Meadows.
Notable features described on this example include vertical slide serrations, fixed combat-style sights, a solid recoil spring guide configuration, and grip panels fitted with medallions. Together, these details reflect the practical, presentation-grade character associated with the model’s intended role.
More than a standard production pistol, this prototype stands within the development lineage of the M15 General Officer Model. It offers a direct look at the refinement of markings, configuration, and design choices as the program moved toward limited-issue production.
