Rock Island Arsenal

Rock Island Arsenal is one of the most historically significant military installations and manufacturing complexes in the United States, located on an island in the Mississippi River between Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa. Established as a military installation in 1862 and developed as an arsenal and manufacturing facility during and after the Civil War, the Arsenal has continuously served the United States military for more than 160 years, making it the oldest and largest active military installation in the country still engaged in manufacturing.

The Arsenal became particularly significant in American firearms history through its production of various military small arms, most notably the M1911 pistol during and after World War I and World War II. Rock Island Arsenal-produced 1911 pistols are among the most sought-after variants of the model, valued by collectors for their historical significance and relatively limited production numbers compared to those of commercial contractors such as Colt. These original military-issue pistols are distinctly marked with the Arsenal’s “RIA” stamp and associated inspector marks, making them readily identifiable to collectors.

In addition to small arms, Rock Island Arsenal has historically produced artillery, wheeled vehicles, and a wide variety of military equipment and components. Today, the installation remains an active U.S. Army facility housing multiple military organizations and continuing to perform maintenance, manufacturing, and research and development activities in support of the Army’s readiness requirements.

In the civilian market, the name “Rock Island Armory” has also been adopted by Armscor, a Philippine manufacturer, as the brand name for its line of affordable 1911-pattern pistols sold in the United States, which are unrelated to the U.S. military installation. The distinction between the historical military Arsenal and the commercial brand is an important one for collectors and enthusiasts to maintain.
