The SIG Sauer P220 is a full-size service pistol introduced in 1975 that marked a pivotal moment in SIG Sauer’s commercial history and established the design DNA that would define the P-series family for decades. Chambered initially in 9mm and subsequently in .45 ACP and .38 Super, the P220 introduced SIG’s characteristic combination of double-action/single-action trigger system, decocking lever, all-metal construction, and the Browning-derived tilting-barrel operating system to the professional and commercial markets. It was adopted by the Swiss military as the P75 and subsequently by German state police forces and other agencies across Europe and North America.
The P220 established a design philosophy that prioritized passive safety—relying on a decocking lever rather than a manual safety to manage the hammer state, accepting that the first shot’s long double-action pull is itself a meaningful safety feature, and trusting the design’s inherent mechanical reliability over additional mechanical safeties. This philosophy proved influential and was carried forward into the P226, P228, P229, and subsequent SIG P-series designs, making the P220 the progenitor of one of the most successful and respected families in modern handgun history.
The .45 ACP version of the P220, introduced for the American market where the .45 ACP cartridge has a devoted following, proved particularly successful and is the configuration most associated with the P220 in the United States. The combination of SIG’s quality of manufacture with the traditional American service cartridge created a pistol with an outstanding reputation for accuracy, reliability, and overall quality that remains relevant in the competition for the premium end of the American defensive handgun market.
The P220 is collected as the founding model of the SIG P-series family and remains in production as a premium duty and target pistol representing SIG Sauer’s traditional all-metal construction at its finest.
