Consecutive serial number sets represent one of the most specialized and sought-after categories in firearms collecting, comprising two or more firearms of the same model whose serial numbers run in unbroken numerical sequence, for example, a pair of revolvers bearing serial numbers 12345 and 12346, or a set of three pistols numbered 00100, 00101, and 00102. These sets are prized by collectors precisely because assembling them requires that the original factory pairing or sequence has been preserved intact across the decades since manufacture, a circumstance that becomes increasingly improbable with the passage of time.

The appeal of consecutive serial number sets is both logical and deeply aesthetic. From a historical perspective, firearms bearing consecutive serial numbers were manufactured at virtually the same moment in the production process, making them as close to identical as mass production allows. They were stamped, assembled, inspected, and very likely shipped together, meaning they share a common factory history in the most literal sense. For collectors who seek to understand how a firearm was manufactured and what it looked like when it left the factory, a consecutive pair offers the satisfaction of possessing what are essentially twins.

Consecutive sets are most highly valued when both or all pieces are in matching, unfired or minimally handled condition, retain all original finishes and components, and come with original boxes, paperwork, and accessories. Sets that have been separated at some point in their history and subsequently reunited are generally considered less desirable than those with documented continuous joint ownership, as the provenance of an unbroken set is itself part of its appeal.

Pairs are the most common form of consecutive sets, but three-, four-, and even larger sets exist for certain popular models and are proportionally rarer and more valuable.
