Springfield Armory, Inc. is an American commercial firearms manufacturer based in Geneseo, Illinois, that takes its name from the historic U.S. government arsenal of the same name in Springfield, Massachusetts. Though the two entities are entirely distinct, the government arsenal was deactivated in 1968. The commercial Springfield Armory was founded in 1974 and has grown into one of the largest and most commercially successful American firearms companies, producing a broad range of pistols and rifles for the civilian, law enforcement, and military markets.
The company first established its identity through the production and importation of 1911-pattern pistols, including models assembled from domestic and imported components. Springfield Armory’s 1911 lineup, including the Mil-Spec, the Range Officer, the Trophy Match, and the Loaded series, helped bring the 1911 to a broader audience through competitive pricing and a wide variety of factory-available features. The Operator series and other tactical variants appealed to the law enforcement and duty markets.
Springfield Armory significantly expanded its market reach with the introduction of the XD (Extreme Duty) series of polymer-framed striker-fired pistols, a line derived from the Croatian HS2000 design that competes directly with the Glock and other modern service pistols. The XD series, including compact, sub-compact, and full-size variants, found considerable commercial success in the civilian and law enforcement markets.
More recently, the company introduced the Hellcat, a highly compact micro-carry pistol with a surprisingly high-capacity magazine, which quickly became one of the best-selling concealed-carry pistols in the United States. Springfield Armory also produces the M1A, a semi-automatic civilian version of the M14 battle rifle, beloved by traditional rifle enthusiasts. The company’s comprehensive product line and aggressive marketing make it a dominant commercial presence in the American market.
