SIG Sauer is a Swiss-German firearms manufacturer with a history spanning more than 150 years, founded through the merger of Swiss Industrial Company (SIG) of Neuhausen am Rheinfall, Switzerland, and J.P. Sauer & Sohn of Eckernförde, Germany. The company has grown into one of the most important and diverse firearms manufacturers in the world, producing a comprehensive range of handguns, rifles, suppressors, optics, and ammunition that are widely used by military forces, law enforcement agencies, and civilian shooters across the globe.
SIG Sauer’s handgun legacy is anchored by the P226 series, a full-size 9mm pistol that was selected as the standard sidearm of numerous military and law enforcement agencies, most notably the U.S. Navy SEALs and many European police forces. The P226 is renowned for its reliability, accuracy, and the quality of its double-action/single-action trigger system. The compact P228 and P229 variants extended the P-series family and became equally respected in their own right, with the P229 adopted by numerous U.S. federal agencies.
The company’s more recent P320 striker-fired modular pistol series represents a significant evolution in its product line, featuring a serialized trigger group that can be moved between different grip modules and slide assemblies, allowing remarkable reconfiguration versatility. The P320 was selected as the U.S. Army’s Modular Handgun System (M17/M18) in 2017, one of the most significant military handgun procurement contracts in decades.
SIG Sauer’s American subsidiary, headquartered in Newington, New Hampshire, has expanded substantially in recent years, developing a full-line American manufacturing operation that produces pistols, rifles, suppressors, and optics under the SIG Sauer brand. The company’s acquisition of Electro-Optics and ammunition businesses has made it a comprehensive small-arms solutions provider with few rivals for the breadth of its capabilities.
