Colt

Colt’s Manufacturing Company is one of the most iconic names in American firearms history, a brand so deeply woven into the national narrative that its products have become cultural symbols as much as mechanical instruments. Founded by Samuel Colt in Hartford, Connecticut in 1836, the company pioneered the mass production of revolvers using interchangeable parts, a manufacturing innovation that helped define the American industrial revolution. The Colt Single Action Army revolver, introduced in 1873 and popularly known as the “Peacemaker,” became the definitive sidearm of the American West and remains one of the most recognized firearms ever made.

Colt’s contribution to 20th-century firearms design is equally profound. The company produced John Browning’s revolutionary M1911 pistol, which served as the standard sidearm of the United States military for over seven decades and established the standard by which all subsequent semi-automatic pistols would be judged. Colt also manufactured the M16 rifle and its civilian counterpart, the AR-15, which have collectively become the most widely produced and recognized rifle pattern in American history.

Throughout the 20th century, Colt supplied the U.S. military with a succession of influential arms, including the M1903 pocket pistol, the 1911A1, the M16A1, and the M4 carbine. The company’s law enforcement and civilian product lines have remained popular despite periods of financial difficulty, including a bankruptcy filing in 2015 that briefly cast uncertainty over the brand’s future.

Today, Colt continues to produce the 1911 in various configurations, the iconic Single Action Army revolver, and a range of AR-15 pattern rifles and carbines. For collectors, history enthusiasts, and serious shooters, the Colt name carries a weight of heritage that few manufacturers anywhere in the world can match.
