Description
The Smith & Wesson Prototype 4006 Performance Center Special is an early custom-shop competition pistol built for Judy Woolley during the formative years of the Smith & Wesson Performance Center. Based on the Model 4006 platform, this prototype reflects the specialized development work being done for competitive shooters in the early 1990s.
Factory historical documentation from the Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation states that the pistol was shipped directly to Judy Woolley on February 7, 1992, as a special Performance Center production model. Its configuration was tailored for Steel Challenge competition, with a focus on fast handling and competition-oriented features.
This pistol is equipped with a 5-inch barrel fitted with a Schuemann Hybrid compensator. The slide and frame have a satin stainless finish, and the pistol is also fitted with a B-Square steel mount and a Tasco ProPoint red dot sight, an optic setup characteristic of period competition handguns.
Altogether, the configuration captures an early stage in Performance Center development, when specialized competition builds explored new approaches to handgun setup and sighting systems. For collectors interested in Performance Center prototypes, competition firearms, and Smith & Wesson pistols, this is a distinctive example with documented factory history.
