Description
The Smith & Wesson Model 547 Prototype in .22 LR reflects the company’s experimental development work and a later revisit of a U.S. military survival handgun concept first explored in the late 1950s.
According to the accompanying documentation, this prototype was built on a Model 547 frame and fitted with an 8 3/8-inch barrel sourced from a Model 53. The long-barreled configuration was intended to accommodate a scope mount for varmint and prairie-dog hunting, and the revolver was completed in February 1990 before being transferred to the developer for testing and field use.
The revolver features a deep polished blue finish and an extended barrel profile with an integrated scope rail that highlights its experimental layout. Mounted on the barrel rib is a vintage Simmons 2.5x scope secured by a custom mount, matching the project’s goal of combining revolver portability with a scoped small-caliber hunting setup.
Also included are interchangeable barrels and an additional cylinder, further reflecting the modular, developmental nature of the project. For collectors and enthusiasts interested in Smith & Wesson experimental arms, this prototype presents a distinctive documented configuration with clear ties to the company’s engineering exploration.
