Engraved U.S. Colt 1911 Attributed to Famed Texas Ranger Captain

A U.S. Colt Model 1911 manufactured in 1917 and extensively customized with floral engraving, sterling silver grips by Lopez Engraving, and gold inlaid initials “M/T/G.” This example is attributed by a prior owner to Texas Ranger Captain Manuel T. Gonzaullas and includes a fitted display set with case, stand, plaque, and book.

Description

Originally manufactured in 1917 under U.S. military contract, this U.S. Colt Model 1911 has been extensively customized with floral motif engraving across much of the pistol. The engraving uses a punch-dot-backed style that gives the surface a bold, highly textured look, while the original barrel address and model markings remain present.

Notable modifications include a cut-away trigger guard with a portion of the original lower shoulder remaining, along with filled holes under the frame and trigger area from prior display or fitting work. The barrel is marked “HS” for High Standard and retains its original blue finish. The bushing, plug, and magazine are polished nickel, creating contrast against the rest of the pistol.

The grips were made by Lopez Engraving in sterling silver with darkened engraved fields. The left panel features gold inlaid initials “M/T/G,” and the right panel is fitted with a Texas Ranger Captain’s badge.

This pistol has been attributed by a prior owner to Texas Ranger Captain Manuel T. Gonzaullas. While it is not definitively documented as his sidearm, the attribution accompanies a period-style presentation that reflects his era of service. The silver grips are modern additions.

Included with the pistol are a padded hardwood case, a custom hardwood and glass display stand with Texas Ranger carvings, a large hardwood plaque detailing Gonzaullas’ life and career, and a copy of Captain M.T. Gonzaullas: Lone Wolf by Brownson Malsch.
