The Walther P99 is a polymer-framed, striker-fired semi-automatic pistol introduced in 1997 that represented Walther’s first purpose-designed entry into the polymer frame era and demonstrated that the company could compete effectively in the market space that Glock had defined. Chambered in 9mm Parabellum and .40 S&W with double-stack magazine capacities of 15 and 12 rounds respectively, the P99 was designed from the outset to incorporate ergonomic and safety feature advantages over the Glock while delivering the weight and maintenance advantages of polymer frame construction.
The P99’s trigger system is one of its most distinctive features—it fires from a partially pre-cocked striker position with a trigger pull that is longer and heavier than a single-action striker-fired pull but significantly lighter than a conventional double-action revolver trigger, providing a consistent first-shot pull without the full double-action weight of traditional hammer-fired designs. A decocking button on the top of the slide returns the striker to its fully pre-tensioned position, allowing the first shot to be fired with a longer pull from a lower pre-cocked state when circumstances demand an additional safety margin. The trigger also functions in what Walther calls Quick Defense Action, a partially pre-cocked condition that allows a second-strike capability.
The P99 was adopted by the Finnish and Polish militaries, various European police agencies, and by James Bond in the films following the switch from the PPK in 1997—a cultural endorsement that introduced the pistol to a global audience far beyond its commercial reach. The P99’s ergonomics are generally considered among the best of any polymer-framed pistol, with interchangeable backstraps, a natural grip angle, and excellent trigger guard geometry.
The P99 platform formed the basis for the Smith & Wesson SW99, produced under a licensing agreement, further demonstrating the design’s commercial credibility.
