The Smith & Wesson M&P (Military & Police) is a line of polymer-framed, striker-fired semi-automatic pistols introduced in 2005 that represents Smith & Wesson’s most successful and comprehensive challenge to the Glock’s dominance of the law enforcement and defensive handgun market. Chambered primarily in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP with various magazine capacity configurations, the M&P was designed from the outset to address perceived ergonomic and functional limitations of existing polymer-framed pistols, offering a different grip angle, improved ergonomics, and a variety of user-adjustable grip backstraps to accommodate different hand sizes.
The M&P’s grip angle is notably different from the Glock’s, sitting closer to the angle of a 1911 and thereby suiting a broader range of shooters who find the Glock’s pronounced grip angle less natural. The interchangeable backstrap system—offering small, medium, and large panels that alter the grip’s circumference and feel—was innovative at introduction and has been widely adopted as a feature by competing manufacturers. These ergonomic choices helped the M&P find acceptance among agencies and individuals whose personnel or preferences weren’t well served by the Glock.
The M&P was adopted by numerous law enforcement agencies across the United States and in other countries following its introduction, and the platform has continued to evolve through M&P 2.0 variants that addressed trigger and frame geometry improvements requested by professional users. The Shield and Shield Plus compact single-stack variants extended the M&P platform into the concealed-carry market with considerable commercial success.
Smith & Wesson’s backing of the M&P with the company’s longstanding law enforcement relationships and service support infrastructure helped the platform achieve rapid institutional adoption, and it now represents one of the most widely issued law enforcement handguns in America alongside the Glock. For both professional and civilian users, the M&P offers a well-engineered, ergonomically considered alternative to the Glock paradigm.
