The SIG Sauer P226 is arguably the most celebrated and respected service pistol of the late 20th century, a full-size 9mm semi-automatic pistol that has been adopted by the U.S. Navy SEALs, the FBI, numerous European military and police forces, and more law enforcement agencies in more countries than perhaps any other single pistol design. Introduced in 1983 and developed as a competitor in the U.S. military’s Joint Service Small Arms Program trial that ultimately selected the Beretta 92 as the M9, the P226 offered a number of advantages over its competition—including its lack of a manual safety, its superior trigger system, and its exceptional build quality—even though Beretta’s lower unit cost ultimately decided the military contract.
