The Mauser C96, commonly known as the “Broomhandle Mauser” for its distinctive cylindrical wooden grip, is one of the most historically significant and visually iconic semi-automatic pistols ever produced. Introduced by Mauser in 1896 and remaining in production until 1937, the C96 was among the first semi-automatic pistols to achieve widespread commercial and military use, chambered originally in the 7.63mm Mauser cartridge—a high-velocity bottlenecked round that was among the most powerful pistol cartridges of its era and that directly inspired the development of the 7.62mm Tokarev cartridge used in Soviet arms decades later.

The C96’s operating mechanism is a locked-breech short-recoil system using a bolt locked by a locking piece that pivots in the receiver, an arrangement that was innovative at the time of its development. The integral box magazine mounted ahead of the trigger guard is loaded from the top using stripper clips, a feeding system that differs fundamentally from the detachable magazine that became standard on subsequent pistol designs. This fixed-magazine configuration has both advantages—the magazine cannot be lost or left behind—and limitations in terms of reload speed.

The C96 was used extensively in both World Wars, the Chinese Civil War, the Spanish Civil War, and numerous other conflicts throughout the early 20th century, appearing in service with German, Chinese, Spanish, and many other forces. A variant chambered in 9mm Parabellum—identifiable by the large “9” carved into the grips—was produced for German use in World War I when 7.63mm ammunition was unavailable.

Winston Churchill famously carried a Mauser C96 during the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. The pistol’s visual distinctiveness has made it a recurring prop in popular culture, most famously as the basis for Han Solo’s blaster in the Star Wars franchise. Its combination of historical significance and striking appearance makes it one of the most sought-after collectible pistols of the early semi-automatic era.
