The Korriphila HSP 701 is an exceptionally rare and technically fascinating West German semi-automatic pistol produced in small numbers during the 1980s and early 1990s, widely regarded among connoisseurs as one of the finest-built production pistols ever manufactured. Designed by Edgar Budischowsky and produced in very limited quantities, the HSP 701 applies a roller-delayed blowback operating system—similar in principle to that used in the Heckler & Koch MP5 and G3—to a conventional service pistol format, producing a weapon of remarkable mechanical smoothness and unusual engineering character.
The roller-delayed system in the HSP 701 works by using two rollers in the bolt head that lock into recesses in the barrel extension at the moment of firing, delaying the rearward movement of the slide until chamber pressure drops to safe levels. This delayed-blowback mechanism, rather than a conventional locked-breech short-recoil system, produces a notably softer and more controlled firing cycle with reduced felt recoil compared to pistols of similar caliber using conventional operating systems. The smooth cycling also contributes to the HSP 701’s reputation for exceptional inherent accuracy.
What truly defines the HSP 701, however, is the quality of its manufacture. Each pistol was assembled with a level of hand-fitting and quality control that approaches the standard of fine Swiss watches, with slides and frames fitted together with a precision that is felt immediately in the hand—an absence of play and a smoothness of action that sets the HSP 701 apart from virtually any competitor. Surface finishes are of exceptional quality, and the overall standard of construction reflects a willingness to spend whatever time was necessary to achieve the desired result.
Production numbers were extremely small, making genuine HSP 701 pistols quite rare on the collector market. For those who appreciate firearms as mechanical art, the Korriphila HSP 701 represents an essentially unmatched combination of engineering innovation and manufacturing excellence.
