Model 83

The CZ Model 83 is a compact double-action/single-action semi-automatic pistol produced by Česká zbrojovka in Uherský Brod, Czech Republic, offered in calibers including .380 ACP (9mm Browning Short), 9mm Makarov, and .32 ACP. A development of the earlier CZ 82 military pistol—which was adopted by the Czechoslovak People’s Army as a replacement for the Tokarev TT-33—the Model 83 is the commercial export version of this design, sharing its fundamental architecture but produced for the civilian and export law enforcement markets.

The Model 83 uses a simple blowback operating system appropriate to the modest chamber pressures of its chambering options, with a double-action/single-action trigger mechanism and an ambidextrous safety/decocking lever that allows the hammer to be safely lowered on a loaded chamber. The double-stack magazine provides a capacity of 15 rounds in .380 ACP—a generous capacity for a compact pistol of this chambering—and the all-steel construction gives the pistol a solid, quality feel that exceeds many comparable Western European and American pistols of similar size.

The Model 83’s quality of manufacture reflects CZ’s consistent reputation for producing firearms of excellent value, with tight machining tolerances, good fit and finish, and reliable function that belies the relatively modest price point at which these pistols have typically been available in Western markets. The ergonomics are comfortable, the sights are usable, and the trigger, in both double-action and single-action modes, is better than most competitors in the compact blowback pistol category.

In the American collector and shooter market, CZ Model 83 pistols represent excellent value as compact defensive pistols with genuine quality credentials and an interesting connection to the Central European military tradition from which they derive.
