The Colt Government Model is the original full-size commercial version of John Browning’s M1911 design, the pistol from which all subsequent 1911 variants derive and against which all alternatives are measured. Featuring a 5-inch barrel, full-size grip frame, and chambered originally in .45 ACP—though subsequently offered in 9mm, .38 Super, 10mm, and other calibers—the Government Model represents the 1911 in its complete, intended form, unchanged in its essential dimensions from the military specification that Browning and Colt established in 1911 and that the U.S. military carried for 74 years.

The Government Model’s 5-inch barrel provides the 1911 platform with its best inherent accuracy potential, longest sight radius, and highest muzzle velocity for any given cartridge, making it the preferred configuration for serious competitive shooting and for shooters who prioritize accuracy over compactness. The full-size grip accommodates most hand sizes comfortably with all fingers on the grip, and the weight of the all-steel construction—approximately 38 ounces loaded—absorbs recoil effectively, allowing accurate rapid fire.

Colt has produced the Government Model in virtually every configuration imaginable across more than a century of production, from basic parkerized military-specification models through stainless steel target variants, elegant custom shop pieces, elaborately engraved presentation arms, and everything in between. The Series 70 and Series 80 designations identify important generational differences in internal safety features, with many competitive shooters preferring the simpler Series 70 mechanism for its trigger characteristics.

For collectors, a Colt Government Model in excellent condition with matching components and, ideally, original box and papers represents one of the defining American firearms of the 20th century. For shooters, it remains the reference standard for the single-action semi-automatic pistol category, its fundamental design unchanged across eleven decades of continuous production.
