The Beretta 92FS is the current production evolution of the Beretta 92 family and the variant that has achieved the broadest military, law enforcement, and civilian adoption of any pistol in the series. Introduced in the late 1980s as a response to military testing feedback that identified certain structural vulnerabilities in earlier production examples, the 92FS incorporates a redesigned slide with an enlarged ejection port, a reshaped hammer pin, and other modifications intended to prevent slide separation in the event of an out-of-battery detonation—a catastrophic but rare occurrence that testing had identified as a potential hazard with the earlier design under extreme abuse conditions.
The most visually distinctive change from the earlier 92F is the addition of a slide rail extension that limits rearward travel, a modification that addresses the structural concern while maintaining the characteristic open-top slide configuration that defines the family’s appearance. The 92FS also features an enlarged trigger guard with a squared profile, ambidextrous safety/decocker controls on the slide, and an alloy frame with a dust cover that accepts accessory rail attachments on later production versions.
The 92FS has been adopted by the U.S. military as the M9, by numerous police and security agencies worldwide, and by the Italian Carabinieri and military forces, making it one of the most widely issued service pistols in history. Its 15-round magazine capacity, reliable double-action/single-action trigger system, and excellent inherent accuracy have made it a respected duty weapon across multiple decades of service.
In the civilian market, the 92FS is popular as a home defense and range pistol, valued for its accuracy, its comfortable ergonomics for shooters with larger hands, and the confidence that comes from a design with the most extensive real-world reliability record of any modern service pistol. It remains in continuous production and is available in a range of finishes and configurations.
