Smith & Wesson is the most famous name in American revolver history and one of the oldest and most recognized firearms brands in the world. Founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1852 by Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson, the company pioneered the modern metallic-cartridge revolver and has remained at the forefront of American firearms manufacturing for more than 170 years. Today, as part of American Outdoor Brands (and after a corporate reorganization as Smith & Wesson Brands), the company produces a comprehensive range of revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, AR-platform rifles, and related products.
Smith & Wesson’s revolver heritage is unmatched. The company developed the first commercially successful revolver to fire self-contained metallic cartridges, and a succession of iconic models followed across the decades. The Model 29 .44 Magnum, made famous by Clint Eastwood’s “Dirty Harry” films, the Model 10 Military & Police, which served American law enforcement for generations, and the Model 686 .357 Magnum, a perennial favorite of sport shooters and hunters, are among the many landmark revolvers the company has produced.
The company’s entry into the semi-automatic pistol market with the M&P (Military & Police) series in 2005 proved enormously successful, establishing a competing polymer-framed striker-fired platform against Glock’s dominance. The M&P line has become one of the most widely issued law enforcement pistols in the United States and has been embraced by millions of civilian users.
Smith & Wesson’s manufacturing expertise, broad product range, and deeply embedded position in American firearms culture ensure its continued relevance across generations of shooters. From classic revolvers to modern defensive pistols to AR-platform rifles, the company serves virtually every segment of the civilian and professional markets with consistent quality.
