Lewis Machine and Tool Company, universally known as LMT, is an American firearms manufacturer based in Milan, Illinois, that has built an exceptional reputation in the military, law enforcement, and precision rifle communities for producing some of the most rugged and accurate AR-15 and AR-10 platform rifles available. Founded in 1980 by Karl Lewis, the company initially focused on manufacturing machine tools before transitioning to firearms production, and it has maintained the precision manufacturing standards of its machine tool heritage in its firearms work.
LMT is particularly known for its proprietary Monolithic Rail Platform (MRP) upper receiver design, which machines the upper receiver and rail system from a single billet of aluminum, eliminating the interface between a separate handguard and receiver. This design provides exceptional rigidity and consistency in the attachment of accessories and optics, and it also allows for quick barrel changes without specialized tools. The MRP system has been adopted by special operations units in several countries and has earned a reputation for exceptional durability and performance under harsh operational conditions.
The New Zealand Defence Force selected the LMT MARS-L rifle as its standard individual service weapon, a significant validation of the company’s military-grade manufacturing standards. LMT rifles are also used by special operations forces in the United Kingdom and other NATO countries. This level of military adoption reflects the company’s ability to meet demanding procurement specifications and deliver consistent quality at scale.
LMT’s civilian and law enforcement product line includes a range of carbines, rifles, and precision bolt-action platforms that draw on the same manufacturing standards applied to its military contracts. For shooters who prioritize genuine military-grade quality and are willing to pay for it, LMT occupies a position near the top of the AR-platform market.
