Korriphila is a rare and largely obscure West German firearms manufacturer that produced a small number of extraordinarily well-made semi-automatic pistols during the 1980s and early 1990s, achieving a level of recognition among firearms connoisseurs that is entirely disproportionate to its production volume. The company, associated with designer Edgar Budischowsky, produced the HSP 701 pistol, a weapon remarkable for its innovative roller-delayed blowback operating system, exceptional fit and finish, and the extreme care taken in its construction.
The Korriphila HSP 701 is chambered primarily in 9mm Parabellum, though versions in other calibers were also produced, and it employs a roller-delayed operating system similar in principle to that used in HK’s MP5 and G3 designs. This operating system, applied to a pistol format, produces a weapon with a remarkably smooth operating cycle and reduced felt recoil compared to conventional short-recoil operated pistols. Combined with the pistol’s high-quality barrel and tight assembly tolerances, this contributes to notable accuracy.
What most distinguishes the Korriphila, however, is the quality of its manufacturing. Each pistol was assembled with a level of hand-fitting and quality control more characteristic of a watchmaker than a firearms manufacturer, resulting in actions of exceptional smoothness and components that fit together with a precision that most production firearms never approach. The finish quality, fit of parts, and overall construction standard place the HSP 701 in a category occupied by very few production handguns.
Production numbers were extremely small, making Korriphila pistols quite rare and highly collectible today. They represent a fascinating footnote in European firearms history, a small company’s attempt to produce the finest possible service pistol regardless of cost, resulting in a weapon that achieved cult status among aficionados.
