Glock

Glock GmbH is an Austrian firearms manufacturer that fundamentally changed the handgun industry when it introduced the Glock 17 in 1982. Founded by Gaston Glock, an engineer with no prior firearms manufacturing experience, the company approached handgun design with fresh eyes and produced a pistol that was lighter, more reliable, simpler to maintain, and easier to manufacture than most of its contemporaries. The Glock 17’s polymer frame, safe-action trigger system, and reduced parts count compared to traditional designs proved revolutionary, earning it rapid and widespread adoption by the military and law enforcement.

The Glock pistol’s polymer frame, which was controversial when first introduced and prompted unfounded media speculation that it could evade airport metal detectors, is now so commonplace that it defines the modern service pistol category. The safe-action trigger system, which incorporates three passive safety devices that are automatically disengaged during the firing stroke, eliminates the need for a manual safety while providing a consistent trigger pull and a high degree of passive safety. This design philosophy has proven enormously successful in professional use, where administrative and high-stress handling is common.

Today, Glock produces pistols in a vast array of sizes and calibers, from compact subcompact models for concealed carry to full-size competition and duty configurations. The Glock 17 in 9mm remains the most widely issued law enforcement handgun in the United States and is standard issue for police and military forces in dozens of countries. The Glock 19, a compact variant, has achieved remarkable popularity as both a duty and concealed-carry pistol.

Glock’s influence on subsequent handgun design is immeasurable; virtually every major polymer-framed striker-fired pistol introduced since 1982 bears its philosophical imprint. The company’s manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Georgia, serves the American market, ensuring continued domestic availability and support.
