Description
The Colt SSP Prototype Double Action Semi-Automatic Pistol reflects Colt’s early-1970s exploration of a more modern service sidearm. Referred to as the SSP, for Stainless Steel Pistol or Stainless Service Pistol, it departed significantly from the traditional 1911 pattern and introduced a design that looked well beyond its era.
This prototype features a fixed barrel without a swinging link, a full-length external rail system guiding the slide, and a modular hammer and mainspring assembly intended to simplify field stripping. The design was also conceived with caliber flexibility in mind, allowing conversion between 9mm and .45 ACP with minimal parts changes.
Marked “COLT’S MODEL S S P / 45 ACP”, this example represents one of Colt’s notable experimental pistol designs from the period, with a configuration that highlights the company’s interest in modularity, streamlined mechanical design, and a forward-looking approach to service pistol development.
