Description
The Smith & Wesson Model 3 Schofield is one of the defining revolver designs of the 19th century, recognized for its sweeping barrel profile, top-break frame, and distinctly purposeful balance. This first production example is chambered in .45 Smith & Wesson and reflects the configuration that made the Schofield such a notable advancement in single-action revolver design.
Developed in the 1870s and refined at the request of Major George W. Schofield, the Model 3 introduced a top-break action that allowed the revolver to open with a single motion while the extractor lifted to eject spent cartridges. That system made reloading faster and more practical, especially in mounted use, and remains one of the Schofield’s most recognizable mechanical features.
This revolver pairs polished metal surfaces with walnut grips, giving the design a strong visual contrast and an unmistakably classic presentation. Details such as the cylinder machining, latch geometry, and overall frame contours highlight the thoughtful construction associated with the model.
As a first production variant, this Model 3 Schofield represents an early expression of a landmark American revolver design. For collectors and enthusiasts, it offers a direct connection to the period when the Schofield entered service and established its place in firearms history.
